Find a Eco Installer

Grants & certifications for eco home upgrades

Several UK schemes can cover most of the cost of solar, heat pumps, insulation and EV chargers. MCS, TrustMark, NICEIC and RECC are the credentials that decide which installers can deliver them. Here's a plain-English guide to both.

Grants

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

Up to £7,500 off an air-source heat pump (or £5,000 off a biomass boiler) for homes in England and Wales. The grant is paid directly to your installer, who must be MCS-certified for the work to qualify.

ECO4

The Energy Company Obligation funds free or heavily subsidised insulation, heating upgrades and renewables for eligible low-income households. Runs until March 2026. Eligibility is income-tested and your installer applies on your behalf.

Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS)

Insulation help, loft, cavity wall and similar measures, for homes in lower council tax bands with an EPC rating of D or below. Designed to reach the squeezed middle who don't qualify for ECO4.

OZEV EV chargepoint grant

£350 off a home EV charger. Since April 2022, eligibility is limited to renters and flat-owners. Homeowners in single-family houses are no longer covered.

Certifications

MCS

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme is the gateway to most UK renewables grants, including the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. If you want a heat pump, solar PV or solar thermal install funded by a government scheme, your installer almost certainly needs to be MCS-certified. Verify any installer at mcscertified.com.

TrustMark

Government-endorsed quality scheme covering retrofit work and consumer protection. TrustMark-registered businesses agree to a code of conduct and dispute resolution process. Often required alongside MCS for publicly-funded retrofit projects.

NICEIC

A registered electrical contractor scheme. Most relevant for solar PV, battery storage and EV chargers, anything involving connection to your home's electrical system.

RECC

The Renewable Energy Consumer Code focuses on sales practices and contracts: clear quotes, fair cancellation rights and protection against high-pressure selling. Common alongside MCS for solar and heat pump companies.
