Why choose MCS-certified
MCS is the UK's quality standard for renewable home installations. MCS certification is required for government grants and most green-finance products.
Solar PV installation — common questions
How long does solar panel installation take in the UK?
Most residential solar panel installations take 1–2 days once your MCS-certified installer has completed the DNO notification (required by your electricity network). The DNO process typically takes 1–4 weeks, so the total time from accepting a quote to panels being live is usually 2–6 weeks.
Is my home suitable for solar panels?
Most homes with a pitched or flat roof are suitable. South-facing roofs produce the most energy, but east- or west-facing roofs still generate 70–80% of a south-facing equivalent. Your installer will assess roof angle, shading from trees or neighbouring buildings, and structural condition before quoting.
What happens to surplus solar energy I don't use?
Surplus electricity is exported to the grid. The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays you for every unit exported — rates vary by energy supplier from around 3p to 15p/kWh. Adding battery storage lets you store surplus instead of exporting it, maximising self-consumption.
Do solar panels work on a north-facing roof?
North-facing roofs are not recommended for solar panels — they receive little direct sunlight and generate minimal output. If your only suitable roof space faces north, a ground-mounted system (if you have garden space) or east/west split installation may be better options.
